What is Mifeprex (mifepristone) and how does it work?

Mifepristone is a medication that impedes the hormone progesterone necessary for sustaining a pregnancy. When used alongside another medicine called misoprostol, it is employed to terminate pregnancies up to ten weeks gestation (within 70 days from the start of the last menstrual period). The typical approved dosing regimen for mifepristone involves:

Day one: Taking 200 mg of mifepristone orally

24 to 48 hours after taking mifepristone: Administering 800 mcg of misoprostol buccally (inside the cheek pouch), in a suitable location for the patient.

The FDA approved mifepristone for medical termination of pregnancy in September 2000.

The FDA initially approved Mifeprex (mifepristone) in September 2000 for terminating pregnancies up to seven weeks gestation, later extending approval to pregnancies up to ten weeks gestation in 2016. In April 2019, the FDA approved a generic version of Mifeprex known as Mifepristone Tablets, 200 mg. The agency's approval signifies that Mifepristone Tablets, 200 mg, is considered therapeutically equivalent to Mifeprex and can safely replace it. Similar to Mifeprex, the approved generic product is intended for terminating pregnancies up to 70 days gestation. The labeling for the approved generic version of Mifeprex aligns with the labeling for Mifeprex.

Is it safe to use Mifeprex (mifepristone)?

Mifepristone, when used as directed and in accordance with the Mifepristone Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) Program, is considered safe. The FDA approved Mifeprex over 20 years ago following a thorough evaluation of scientific evidence, determining its safety and effectiveness for its intended use. Since 2016, it has been approved for medical termination of pregnancy up to 70 days of gestation. Regular reviews conducted by the FDA of the post marketing data for both Mifeprex and its approved generic version have not revealed any new safety concerns associated with the use of mifepristone for terminating pregnancies up to 70 days gestation. As with all medications, the FDA continues to actively monitor the post marketing safety data concerning mifepristone for medical termination of pregnancy.
